Karen Gerton, Early Childhood Director

Karen Gerton has been the Director of the award-winning B’nai Israel Schilit Nursery School (BISNS) for the past eighteen years and has been a member of the B’nai Israel staff since 1989. She holds degrees from the University of Maryland in both special education and elementary education and has secured advanced credentials in early childhood education. As the Director of a Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) licensed school she is committed to being up-to-date on organizational and mandated requirements in order to enhance all aspects of the nursery school program. In addition, Karen’s dedication to remaining current on curricular and training developments is demonstrated in her active membership in a wide variety of professional organizations including NAREA and NAEYC. She has served as Co-Chair of the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington’s (JFGW) Early Childhood Director’s Council as well as being a member of the Directors Leadership Team. She participated in the Jewish Life and Learning’s (JLL) Israel: In our Hearts, Minds and Souls – a two year course studying contemporary and innovative ways to bring Israel into our early childhood classrooms and culminating with a grant-funded trip to Israel. Her dedication to Judaic education extends beyond school walls with her long-term commitment to Jewish summer camps where she has played an administrative role at Camp Louise for over twenty years.
