B’nai Israel’s Sisterhood plays an active role not just within the synagogue but also in the greater community. Through involvement in ongoing programs and implementation of new initiatives, Sisterhood members work together in the spirit of Tikun Olam to help repair the world both close to and far from home. There are opportunities to get involved throughout the year regardless of whether someone has just an hour to help or is looking to make a more regular commitment.

Some of the social action programs B'nai Israel's Sisterhood is proud to be involved include:

• Meals on Wheels
• BINGO at the Hebrew Home
• Collecting for the Snowflake Holiday Gift Project
• Knitting and crocheting blankets (in association with the Montgomery County Association for Family & Community Education)
• Cooking and serving meals for Interfaith Works shelters
• Providing scholarships for Camp Ramah programs for youth with a wide range of disabilities, including developmental and intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, learning differences, and neurological impairments

PASSOVER FLOWERS 

Enhance your holiday table or send flowers to a family member or friend. A beautiful flower arrangement always complements a holiday table. Let B’nai Israel Sisterhood do the legwork so you have less to think of during your holiday preparations. 

$70 for local delivery; $75 for out-of-area delivery

Washington Jewish Week

Renew or subscribe to the Washington Jewish Week through Sisterhood. Make checks payable to B’nai Israel Sisterhood and mail to B’nai Israel (or drop off at the main office). $55 for one year $100 for two years. Senior rates (age 55+) are $42 and $76. Questions? Contact Linda Reisner. ​​

volunteer opportunities

Jewish Council on Aging (JCA) Heyman Interages Programs

The JCA^® Heyman Interages^® Center intergenerational programs have brought children and older adults together for more then 30 years. Volunteers age 50+ are needed to mentor and tutor youths ages 4-18 in selected schools and other programs throughout Montgomery County. Help Sisterhood support the Blanket Making Project (MCAFCE/Warm Up America)

Blankets are distributed to children and teens. Participate by crocheting or knitting squares or donating a handmade, washable blanket (36”x36”). Donations of washable yarn and fabric are also needed. Contact Juliann Goldman for more information or to arrange for pick-up.

Meals on Wheels

Sisterhood delivers meals every Friday to residents in the Rockville and Leisure World area. New people are always welcome to join our teams as regular substitutes. Contact Alice Harris for information and to volunteer.

Jewish Group Homes 

Volunteers are needed to lead prayers and songs at Friday night dinners. Volunteers are also needed for Sunday afternoons to help the residents enjoy an afternoon of cooking, baking, singing, dancing and art project. The Goldstein Home, one of many, is off Seven Locks Road and Post Oak in Potomac. There are 4 young women residents. Teenagers (accompanied by an adult) are invited to volunteer and receive school volunteer credit. For information contact Esther Teller or Francine Triola (240-283-6009).
